The political landscape in Michigan is heating up as former Vice President Kamala Harris is set to join forces with Democratic Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed. This marks a significant moment in their campaign efforts in a pivotal swing state crucial for Senate control.

Having endorsed El-Sayed after his primary victory, Harris and El-Sayed are now poised to make their first joint public appearance. They are scheduled to participate in a discussion on Black maternal health issues on Tuesday, as confirmed by El-Sayed’s campaign.

El-Sayed, known for his background as a physician and his leadership roles in Detroit and Wayne County’s health departments, will be running against the Republican contender Mike Rogers, a former U.S. representative. The race is critical as Democrats aim to maintain their hold on the seat currently occupied by Democrat Gary Peters. Holding this seat is essential for the Democrats’ strategy to gain Senate majority, especially if they lose any other seats.

Harris’ spokesperson, Eduardo Negrón, emphasized the importance of the upcoming election, stating, “It is critical we flip the Senate so we can bring down prices and stand up to Donald Trump’s corruption.”

The Democratic primary in Michigan was contentious, with El-Sayed’s victory over Rep. Haley Stevens highlighting internal party divisions, particularly regarding U.S. policy on Israel. However, prominent Democrats, including former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, have rallied for unity, urging support for El-Sayed in the upcoming midterms.

Harris, who previously ran for president in 2024 and is considered a potential candidate for 2028, will also engage with local officials and Rev. Wendell Anthony, NAACP Detroit branch president, during her Michigan visit.

Further details about Harris and El-Sayed’s campaign efforts and their impact on the Senate race can be followed through the Report for America initiative.
