Power Outages Loom for Flagstaff Amid High Winds and Wildfire Threat

Residents and businesses in the Flagstaff area are bracing for potential power outages as high winds increase the risk of wildfires. Arizona Public Service (APS) has warned that electricity may be cut off for nearly 6,000 homes and businesses in response to the heightened danger.

With rapidly shifting weather patterns, dry conditions, and strong winds, APS is considering power shutoffs to prevent electrical equipment from sparking wildfires. Areas most at risk include eastern Flagstaff and nearby communities such as Cosnino and Doney Park.

APS has indicated that power interruptions could begin as early as 9 a.m. on Wednesday. The duration of these outages will depend on the evolving weather and any damage incurred by power lines or equipment.

The National Weather Service’s Carter Humphreys has reported that wind gusts could reach up to 50 miles per hour. He noted, “This is fairly typical for this time of year. We just get these systems that pass through to our north and create some breezy to gusty winds as we head into spring. So, you know, 40 to 50 miles an hour in the spring isn’t really anything too uncommon.”

Residents are advised to follow fire safety precautions, such as avoiding parking on grass and refraining from discarding cigarettes out of car windows, to minimize fire risks during these windy conditions.
