Lochiel Protests Against Border Wall Continue Amid Arrests and Tensions

In the small town of Lochiel, located east of Nogales, a tense standoff continues as activists protest against the construction of a border wall initiated by the Trump administration. This week has seen a significant escalation in the ongoing confrontation between activists and Border Patrol agents.

On Monday, the situation intensified when dozens of Border Patrol agents descended upon a section of private land where activists had established a camp near a historic cottonwood tree. The tree was subsequently removed by contractors, and several arrests were made by the agents.

Activists reported that five individuals were detained during another clash on Tuesday. By Wednesday morning, a few tents were still visible in the tall grass, and a banner reading “All Walls Fall” was prominently displayed along a nearby barbed wire fence.

Alex Chabbott, an activist who faced arrest during a previous protest against the border wall east of Lochiel in September, expressed his thoughts on the matter.

“I hope this wall doesn’t get built, maybe it will. I hope it comes down before I die, but maybe it won’t,” Chabbott stated. “You know, there’s definitely people out there who are like, ‘oh, why are you doing this … you’re going to lose,’ or ‘you’re clearly not winning — And for me it’s not about winning, it’s about being on the right side of history.”

Just behind Chabbott, contractors were busy installing panels for the steel wall. When completed, the project will feature two parallel steel barriers, spaced approximately 60 feet apart, stretching for miles.

A short distance away, a group of Border Patrol agents gathered beneath an ancient cottonwood tree near the Mexican border, where a new tree sit-in by protesters is currently taking place.

Video footage released by the activist group Tierra Libre on Wednesday afternoon revealed a protester attempting to halt construction by attaching themselves to a truck. Several agents surrounded the vehicle, with one officer trying to remove the protester from the equipment.

The five protesters arrested on Tuesday morning were released without charges by Wednesday afternoon, according to the activist group. Customs and Border Protection has not verified any arrests.

Border Patrol agents gather below the "Abuela," another old-growth cottonwood tree just across the border from Lochiel, in La Noria, Mexico, where protesters have set up another tree-sit on Oct. 7, 2026. A cottonwood on the U.S. side, dubbed the "Grandmother" by activists, was felled this week.

The question of whether Border Patrol agents had a warrant to access the private land where the protesters were stationed remains unanswered by Customs and Border Protection. In a statement, the agency explained that Border Patrol operations in Lochiel were conducted “in support of authorized border infrastructure activities on federally managed land” and in collaboration with partner agencies to “maintain public safety, protect personnel, and ensure compliance with applicable federal laws and land-use restrictions.”

“While most activity remained peaceful, agents took appropriate enforcement action in response to alleged violations and an alleged assault on a federal officer,” the statement read.
