Mark Brnovich Tapped for U.S. Ambassador Role in Serbia

The former Arizona Attorney General, Mark Brnovich, has been nominated to serve as the United States ambassador to Serbia. His tenure as Arizona’s top legal officer spanned from 2015 to 2023, during which he gained recognition for his consumer advocacy efforts.

In 2022, Brnovich pursued a seat in the U.S. Senate but was defeated in the Republican primary. During this campaign, it emerged that Brnovich withheld several reports indicating the absence of voter fraud in Arizona during the 2020 presidential election. Despite this, he released a report that raised questions about President Biden’s win in the state.

This discrepancy was brought to light by current Attorney General Kris Mayes, who released the reports, affirming that the 2020 election was “conducted fairly and accurately by elections officials.”

Brnovich’s political career began with his election as attorney general in 2017, where he succeeded after defeating Tom Horne in the primary and Democratic opponent Felecia Rotellini in the general election. His focus as attorney general was largely on consumer protection, notably securing a multimillion-dollar settlement with Theranos. This settlement aimed to compensate over 76,000 Arizona residents following the administration of approximately 1.5 million flawed blood tests by the company.

His appointment as ambassador was announced by former President Donald Trump and awaits confirmation by the U.S. Senate. Brnovich, whose parents emigrated from the former Yugoslavia, carries a personal connection to the region he is set to serve.
