Kiana Sears, the Democratic incumbent, was appointed to her position in 2025 by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors following the resignation of former state Senator Eva Burch. Sears also holds a position on the Mesa Unified Governing Board and has experience as a “director of community connection and partnerships” at Arizona State University, as per her LinkedIn profile. Although this marks her first legislative campaign, Sears has previously sought election as a justice of the peace and for a role on the Arizona Corporation Commission, where she served as a consultant from 2008 to 2014. Her campaign focuses on healthcare, public safety, and job creation.
