Massive Development in Mesa Promises Jobs and Growth

In a transformative move for Mesa, the city council has greenlit an extensive development project, setting the stage for a significant economic boon. The ambitious Legacy Park and Gateway Crossing initiative, with a projected investment of approximately $3 billion, is poised to generate over 13,500 new jobs.

Strategically positioned just east of Mesa Gateway Airport, this development capitalizes on a decade of residential expansion in the area. Mesa City Manager Scott Butler highlighted the city’s response to this growth, sharing insights with KJZZ about their plans to introduce the largest mixed-use hospitality and retail complex in the city’s history. This includes a luxurious 600-room resort hotel, which Butler notes rivals the offerings in Scottsdale and Phoenix’s Camelback Corridor.

Butler underscored the importance of the resort, along with two additional mid-tier hotels, in enhancing the city’s capacity to host the influx of visitors to the Arizona Athletic Grounds. He emphasized the need for such high-quality accommodations to support regional tourism. Complementing the hospitality sector, the project will also feature office and high-end retail spaces, providing residents with more local amenities.

In addressing concerns about economic leakage, Butler stated, “We hear so often from our residents that they have to drive outside the community. For the city, it hurts us in the sense that we lose all of that sales tax that doesn’t stay in our communities and help support our public safety and our parks and our other amenities.”

From Sept. 15-19, the light and the jagged volcanic cliffs will align perfectly to cast a shadow resembling a cougar on the Superstition Mountains, visible as the sun sets between 5:30 and 6 p.m.
