Alleged Cartel Leader Arrested for Mexican Mayor’s Assassination
In a significant development in Mexico’s ongoing battle against organized crime, authorities have apprehended a man believed to be a leading figure in the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Known as Ramón Álvarez Ayala, or “R1,” he is accused of ordering the assassination of a mayor, a high-profile crime that shook the nation.
The arrest marks a critical step in President Claudia Sheinbaum’s comprehensive strategy aimed at dismantling criminal networks through enhanced intelligence efforts and inter-agency collaboration. “This action represents a significant advance in President Claudia Sheinbaum’s strategy to combat extortion and weaken criminal structures through intelligence, investigation, and coordination,” stated Omar Garcia Harfuch, Mexico’s security minister, on social media.
The charges against Álvarez are connected to the murder of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan in Michoacán, which occurred in late 2025. The killing highlighted the pervasive influence of drug cartels and sparked widespread criticism of governmental efforts to curb violence and ensure public safety.
In connection with this case, Mexican authorities have detained a total of 31 individuals, reflecting a broader crackdown on those implicated in the murder. The head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Terry Cole, extended his congratulations to Mexican security forces for their successful operation in capturing Álvarez.
