Northern Arizona University Launches New Degree in Advanced Manufacturing

In a move aimed at bolstering the workforce in Arizona’s burgeoning semiconductor sector, Northern Arizona University (NAU) is set to offer a new three-year degree focused on advanced manufacturing. This innovative program is designed to equip students with the skills needed to excel in building microelectronics and semiconductors.

Starting this fall, the degree will be accessible to students through the College of Engineering. Courses will not only be held at NAU’s main campus but also offered virtually at the Phoenix campus and Tucson’s Pima Community College. This flexibility aims to reach a wider range of students across the state.

According to university officials, this program is a strategic response to Arizona’s rapidly expanding semiconductor industry, which ranks among the fastest-growing in the nation. “This new bachelor’s degree empowers students to identify real-world engineering challenges and develop practical solutions,” stated James Palmer, the associate dean for academic affairs at the Steve Sanghi College of Engineering.

The launch of this degree coincides with a state-led initiative to expand similar educational programs to community colleges in northern and rural areas of Arizona. This alignment highlights a concerted effort to enhance the state’s capacity to meet the increasing demand for skilled workers in advanced manufacturing.
