Navajo Nation Council Responds to Data Breach Involving Veterans’ Information
In an unexpected turn of events at a laundromat in Farmington, New Mexico, a flash drive containing sensitive information regarding Navajo veterans was found. This discovery has prompted swift action from the Navajo Nation Council.
The council, in a statement released on Tuesday, confirmed it is proactively working to secure the USB drive. The memory stick reportedly holds confidential data, including Social Security numbers, identification documents, W-9 forms, financial aid applications, and direct deposit information of Navajo veterans.
Speaker Crystalyne Curley emphasized the urgency of the situation in the press release, stating, “The Navajo Nation Council has taken action to protect the privacy and trust of our veterans. Given the nature and apparent scope of the information involved, this potential data breach requires prompt and serious attention. We must ensure the appropriate authorities determine what happened, assess the potential impact and take the necessary steps to protect veterans whose confidential information may have been compromised.”
For privacy and safety reasons, the identity of the veteran who discovered the USB drive is not being disclosed. The council has expressed concerns over possible retaliation.
The USB has since been transferred to the FBI field office in Farmington for safekeeping, as the council continues its investigation to identify those responsible for the potential data breach.
