The Rise of a New Institution for Blind Students in Tucson
In the wake of the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind’s Tucson campus shutdown in June, concerns arose about the future of education for blind students in the area. Music teacher Kate Scally Howell, who lost her job due to the closure, turned her worries into action.
While deaf students were relocated to the Oro Valley campus, options remained scarce for those visually impaired. The Tucson Unified School District offered ‘cooperative sites’ for such students, but many families sought alternatives outside the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind (ASDB) network.
In response, Scally Howell launched a new nonprofit private school, the Tucson School for Blind. This institution aims to provide a dedicated learning environment for blind students, recently celebrating the conclusion of its inaugural week.
“I think we’re really hoping that Tucson School for the Blind will be that resource for parents, students, and then post-school,” said Kate Scally Howell, emphasizing the school’s mission to serve as a comprehensive educational resource.
