Peoria School District Faces Leadership Shuffle Amid Scandal
The Peoria Unified School District is undergoing a significant leadership change, prompting a mix of criticism and concern from the community. Amidst allegations involving two teachers and a teenage student, the district’s governing board has appointed Tahlya Visintainer as the new interim superintendent, effective May 26.
This appointment comes after an earlier decision by the board in April to negotiate with Ryan LaDouceur for the role. However, during a special board meeting on Tuesday, Board President Jeff Tobey stated a change in direction. “In my conversations with Dr. LaDouceur, he does not wish to be pulled into the politics of the situation and I want to honor that request,” Tobey remarked, refraining from sharing specific details of their discussion.
The situation is further complicated by conflicting statements from former board president Heather Rooks, who indicated that LaDouceur’s wife alleged on social media that he was forced out. “There was a phone call made on a Sunday morning to push him out,” Rooks claimed, questioning the transparency of the process.
The decision to appoint Visintainer was made amid public scrutiny, with some community members questioning the timing and manner of the board meeting. Concerns were also raised about Visintainer’s experience, as noted by Peoria resident Gabe Johns: “They’re replacing [LaDouceur] with an HR executive who joined PUSD less than a year ago. I think it is weird that someone who doesn’t have a lot of experience, especially in the school district, just got promoted that fast.”
Despite the controversy, Visintainer expressed her commitment to the district, stating, “I love this district, and I love the staff, and I love the students, and I want nothing more than to serve and do it the right way.” Her appointment was approved by a narrow 3-2 vote.
In the backdrop of these leadership changes, a former Peoria high school teacher and soccer coach, Haley Beck, is under federal investigation for allegedly grooming a student. Beck was dismissed from Centennial High School in March.
As the district continues to navigate these challenges, the search for a permanent superintendent remains ongoing.
