The Phoenix Zoo to Begin Construction on Advanced Veterinary Facility
This week marks the beginning of an exciting new project at the Phoenix Zoo—breaking ground on a cutting-edge veterinary medical center. Designed to enhance animal healthcare, the 27,000-square-foot facility will offer state-of-the-art medical services, sophisticated diagnostic tools, and spaces dedicated to clinical research.
Located along the zoo’s Outer Africa Trail, the new facility is part of a $25 million fundraising campaign, which is nearly fulfilled thanks to substantial donations from philanthropic foundations, corporations, and individual contributors. The campaign has already secured close to $24 million.
Visitors to the zoo will have the unique opportunity to observe veterinary procedures through indoor viewing windows and digital screens. Additionally, the facility will include classrooms and collaborative workspaces, providing an educational platform for aspiring wildlife veterinarians.
The zoo’s veterinary team, in partnership with fourth-year veterinary students from Midwestern University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, will provide care at the new center. Midwestern University, a private not-for-profit institution in Glendale, has been collaborating with the Phoenix Zoo since 2013. It is known for graduating over 100 veterinarians annually and operates three community animal clinics.
Gary West, senior vice president of animal health and collection at the Phoenix Zoo, emphasized the educational value of the facility by stating, “This facility will not only enhance our veterinary capabilities but also serve as a dynamic learning environment for the next generation of wildlife veterinarians.” He highlighted the ongoing collaboration with Midwestern University, allowing students to gain practical experience in zoological medicine and a deeper understanding of conservation and animal stewardship.
The completion of this facility is anticipated by late 2026.
