Pocket Fire Disrupts Air Travel in Flagstaff, Prompting Flight Cancellations

As the Pocket Fire rages north of Sedona, its impact has extended beyond the immediate area, causing significant disruptions at Flagstaff Pulliam Airport. The blaze, which has now expanded to over 20,000 acres, has led to the cancellation of at least six flights this week.

In response to the growing threat, fire managers implemented flight restrictions to ensure the safety of firefighting operations. These restrictions, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, are scheduled to remain in effect until July 13 to provide clear airspace for firefighting aircraft.

Claire Harper, a spokesperson for the airport, detailed the implications of these restrictions, noting that they primarily affect larger commercial aircraft. “Some flights have been able to land and take off,” she said, but the restrictions are mostly in place from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., limiting operations during daytime hours.

American Airlines has also felt the repercussions, with long delays affecting flights into and out of Flagstaff. The carrier had to cancel three daily flights between Flagstaff and Phoenix on Tuesday and Wednesday, in addition to a flight to Dallas-Fort Worth.

In an effort to accommodate affected travelers, American Airlines has issued a Travel Alert. Passengers can rebook their flights without incurring change fees, cancel their plans, or request a refund if they meet eligibility criteria, according to a statement provided to KNAU.

Despite the challenges, fire officials report progress in containing the blaze, which is now 21% contained. However, smoke continues to heavily impact the Flagstaff area, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by the fire.
