Pocket Fire Update: Residents Allowed to Return, Caution Advised

In an encouraging development for residents affected by the Pocket Fire, authorities have announced that those evacuated from areas north of Sedona may return to their homes starting Tuesday morning. The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office had previously issued evacuation orders for Oak Creek Canyon and regions south of Forest Highlands late Friday.

The announcement, made via a social media post by the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, states that residents can begin returning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Despite this progress, the fire remains a concern. As of Monday, the Pocket Fire has spanned 257 acres and remains 0% contained.

Residents returning to their homes are advised to stay on high alert, as the areas previously evacuated are still designated under “Set” status. This means they should be ready to evacuate again should conditions worsen. Meanwhile, the area remains off-limits to visitors, and State Route 89A is closed to through-traffic.

According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office, “While conditions have improved to allow this adjustment, residents will continue to see smoke and fire activity for the foreseeable future.” This indicates that while there is some relief in sight, the situation remains dynamic.

Fire managers have issued warnings regarding the Pocket Fire, located approximately 7 miles north of Sedona. Even though it expanded only slightly over the weekend, it still presents a significant threat to Oak Creek.
