The Harmony of American Classics Resounds in Phoenix Libraries
This summer, Phoenix libraries are resonating with the melodies of renowned American composers, thanks to a collaboration with the North Valley Symphony Orchestra. A series of performances aims to bring American musical heritage to life across eight local libraries.
The “250 Years of America: A Musical Event” series kicked off with a performance by a trio of volunteer musicians at the Ocotillo Library, captivating audiences that included families, adults, and an entire class of students. The program features compositions by iconic American figures such as Gershwin, Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, and Edward MacDowell, representing musical eras from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Liz Galpin, a cellist involved in organizing the performances, stated, “They’re all American composers. Yup it’s Gershwin, Irving Berlin, George M Cohan, Edward MacDowell, so it’s a wide range, all pretty much from the late 19th and early 20th century.”
Attendees, like Marquisha Richardson from Rise and Shine Academy, found themselves delightfully surprised by the event. “I did not know they were here today but it was a pleasant surprise. And I love how they were giving small lessons in regards to the composers and the backgrounds behind the music because that’s learning for the children and different things. Now when they go home they know: the ants go marching one by one hurrah hurrah …” Richardson commented, highlighting the educational aspect of the performances.
