Trump Endorses John James in Michigan Governor’s Race
In a significant development in Michigan’s political landscape, former President Donald Trump has lent his support to Congressman John James in the Republican primary for governor. Trump’s endorsement was announced in a Monday post on Truth Social, where he lauded James as a “West Point Graduate, Combat Pilot, Brave Iraq War Veteran, Successful Businessman and Job Creator, and now, as a Highly Respected U.S. Congressman.”
James expressed his gratitude on X, referring to Trump as “The greatest President of my lifetime.” This endorsement arrives at a critical juncture as absentee ballots are soon to be released ahead of the August primary.
The race for the Republican nomination is fiercely contested, with James facing strong opposition from businessman Perry Johnson, former state Attorney General Mike Cox, and state senator Aric Nesbitt.
While Trump’s backing is considered advantageous in the GOP primary, it may pose challenges in a general election context. Current data from Real Clear Politics indicates Trump’s approval rating hovers around 40%, with a 57% disapproval rate.
Not everyone in the Republican field is thrilled with Trump’s choice. Perry Johnson’s campaign criticized the endorsement, suggesting Trump received “bad advice,” and pointed to previous losses by Trump-endorsed Michigan GOP candidates, including James. The campaign stated, “Across the country, Republican voters are proving that an endorsement alone does not decide a governor’s race. Michigan is on track to continue the trend we have seen in states like Iowa and Georgia, and tomorrow South Carolina, where voters rejected bad advice and chose the candidate they believed could actually win.”
Meanwhile, Mike Cox remains unfazed by the endorsement, expressing confidence in his prospects. “I look forward to being President Trump’s favorite governor when I win,” Cox stated.
Democrats were quick to critique the endorsement. The Democratic Governors Association accused Trump of trying to rescue James’ campaign, suggesting it is faltering in the polls and facing backlash from grassroots Republicans. “After voting for Donald Trump’s disastrous and unpopular agenda of raising the cost of groceries and gas and cutting health care, John James is now counting on help from DC to bail out his struggling campaign,” the DGA stated.
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democratic contender for governor, also criticized James, stating, “While families are struggling with the rising cost of everything – groceries, gas, prescription drugs – James has spent the last year focused on one thing: winning Donald Trump’s approval. That comes as no surprise.”
