Soaring Temperatures in Sonora Lead to Increased Heat-Related Illnesses
The intense heat wave sweeping through the Mexican state of Sonora is causing a significant rise in heat-related health issues. As temperatures climb in this desert region just south of Arizona, concerns grow over public health impacts.
This week, Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora, is bracing for temperatures exceeding 110 degrees Fahrenheit. This follows a weekend marked by extreme heat, exacerbating the region’s already challenging conditions.
According to national statistics, Sonora witnessed an increase of nine heat-related illnesses last week, raising the annual count to 47 cases. These conditions include serious ailments such as heat stroke and dehydration. Furthermore, two fatalities attributed to heat stroke have been recorded in the region this year.
Sonora has consistently ranked among the top 10 Mexican states for the prevalence of heat-related health issues. The latest data, which was collected up until Friday, does not reflect any potential cases that might have occurred over the weekend when the heat intensified.
