The Call for Art in Tucson’s Danny Lopez Park
The Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona is extending an invitation to artists globally to contribute their creative visions for a public art installation at the newly renamed Danny Lopez Park in Tucson.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in a community-driven project that traces back to 2020. It was then that the Tucson Native Youth Council embarked on a mission to rechristen a favored birdwatching and fishing locale, previously known as Christopher Columbus Park, which was originally named Silverbell Park in the 1990s.
In the previous autumn, a formal request was submitted to honor Danny Lopez, a revered Tohono O’odham elder and cultural educator, by renaming the site in his memory. The Tucson City Council approved this proposal by the end of last year.
With this new chapter, the arts foundation seeks submissions for a permanent public artwork at the park, aiming to reflect the diverse narratives, cultural heritage, and history of the Tucson area.
Artists from around the globe can apply for the project, which boasts a budget close to $43,500. The deadline for submissions is May 8.
