Tucson Unified School District Confronts High Absenteeism and Enrollment Decline
In an effort to address significant challenges, the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) is focusing on reducing chronic absenteeism, which affects nearly 40% of its students. This issue has persisted since the 2023-24 academic year, prompting concerns from district leaders.
Chronic absenteeism in Arizona is defined as students missing 10%, or 18 days, of the school year. Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo has highlighted a troubling trend in the number of excused absences being recorded, which contributes to the overall absenteeism rate.
Compounding the issue of high absenteeism, TUSD is also anticipating a 3% decrease in overall student enrollment, alongside a significant 13.3% drop in kindergarten enrollment for the current year.
