City of Mason Proposes Overhaul of Zoning Regulations Amid Data Center Debate
In a bid to address concerns over data center developments, Mayor Russell Whipple of Mason has announced efforts to completely overhaul the city’s zoning ordinance. Speaking at a town hall meeting focused on potential data center projects, Whipple revealed that the new zoning guidelines aim to be more stringent.
The discussion comes in the wake of a repealed zoning change that initially sought to add more controls on data centers, a move that sparked differing opinions among City Council members. Despite varying views, there is a consensus that the current regulations provide insufficient safeguards.
Councilmember John Vercher attributed the delay in revisiting the zoning amendment to opposition from anti-data center activists, stating, “We’ve been under threat that anything we bring forward will be up to a citizens’ referendum to shoot down.”
Plans for the revised zoning ordinance could be reviewed by both City Council and the planning commission in a joint session later this year. However, as Whipple pointed out, the city is currently in a holding pattern, pending a rezoning request or a site plan application. “The constant drumbeat of ‘stop, stop, stop,’ we can’t do that now,” Whipple said. “There’s nothing to stop.”
Meanwhile, Paula Caltrider, a leading voice against data center developments, expressed skepticism about the impact of the town hall. “I think what they were trying to do is trying to make it like people were confused and misguided when we already knew everything that they were trying to explain,” she commented.
