The Path from Student to Horse Racing Enthusiast

For those who have only experienced horse racing through a screen, the live experience offers an entirely different thrill, as Tucson resident Tashua Spiess can attest. “Going to a track and watching races live is a whole different ballgame than watching it on TV,” she explained. “It’s definitely magical and gives you chills.”

Originally pursuing a veterinary path, Spiess’s journey at the University of Arizona took a turn towards horse racing, spurred by her growing interest in animal welfare. The university’s Race Track Industry Program, part of the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences, played a pivotal role in transforming her passion for horses into a viable career path.

Established in 1974 with backing from the American Quarter Horse Association, the Race Track Industry Program offers students the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the horse racing industry year-round. A key highlight of the program is an annual seminar that draws industry leaders to the campus, providing students with invaluable insights into the business side of horse racing.
