Water Conservation Measures Enforced at Grand Canyon’s South Rim
A vital waterline servicing the Grand Canyon’s South Rim has experienced a major disruption, prompting immediate water conservation measures. The break occurred beneath the North Kaibab Trail, approximately one mile below Cottonwood Campground, halting the water flow to the South Rim.
In response, both residents and visitors are urged to implement water-saving practices. These include minimizing shower times, limiting toilet usage, operating dishwashers and laundry machines only when fully loaded or on eco-friendly settings, promptly fixing leaks, and utilizing reclaimed water for car washing purposes.
Due to the waterline issue, certain areas such as the Manzanita Rest Area, Cottonwood and Bright Angel campgrounds, Delta restrooms, and Boat Beach are currently without water facilities.
Hikers venturing into the backcountry near Phantom Ranch or along the North Kaibab Trail should be prepared to manage their own water needs. It is advised they carry sufficient water or have the means to filter and purify water from natural sources.
Efforts to repair the waterline are underway, with utility crews working diligently to restore normal water services as soon as possible, according to park officials.
