Barrett’s Haiti-Made Tees Mislabelled as ‘Made in USA’

Republican Rep. Tom Barrett's campaign t-shirts, claimed as "Made in USA," are actually produced in Haiti, conflicting with his job creation stance.

Article Summary –

Republican Rep. Tom Barrett, running for reelection in Michigan’s 7th District, is facing scrutiny for selling t-shirts labeled as “Made in USA” despite evidence showing they are manufactured in Haiti by the Canadian company Gildan, known for offshoring production and facing allegations of poor labor practices. This issue is notable as Barrett’s campaign focuses on boosting domestic jobs and manufacturing, a promise seemingly contradicted by the origin of his campaign merchandise. Currently running for a second term, Barrett lacks labor support, while his Democratic challengers, endorsed by labor unions, are set to be determined in an upcoming primary.

Republican Rep. Tom Barrett is selling t-shirts made in Haiti, contradicting his online store’s claim that they are manufactured in the United States.

This inconsistency is notable as Barrett, representing Michigan’s 7th District, prioritizes domestic job creation and manufacturing in his reelection efforts.

“We want to onshore more of our own manufacturing,” he told WLIX in April during a Lansing machine plant tour. He praised President Donald Trump’s policies for supporting this, despite a surge in offshored jobs last year.

Barrett’s campaign site offers t-shirts labeled “Barrett Brigade,” featuring a helicopter silhouette, nodding to his Black Hawk pilot service in the U.S. Army. They’re described as “100% cotton” and “Made in USA.”

However, August 2024 t-shirt photos show a tag stating “made in Haiti,” indicating production by Gildan, a Canadian firm known for offshoring.

It remains unclear if other Barrett campaign merchandise is also produced abroad.

Gildan has faced criticism over labor practices, including a 2023 incident where 64 Haitian workers were fired for a strike over unpaid overtime. Previously, reports highlighted low wages for Haitian workers, insufficient for basic needs.

Barrett seeks a second term but currently lacks labor union endorsements. His Democratic opponent will be finalized in an Aug. 4 primary, with three endorsed by unions.
