Flint City Council Urges Investigation into Police Conduct
Recent events in Flint have sparked calls for an inquiry into police actions during a protest and a city council meeting, with some council members demanding outside intervention.
Concerns have arisen after Flint Police Department officers were involved in two contentious incidents this week. The first occurred during a protest march on Sunday, where a participant was reportedly removed from his vehicle by force. The second took place at Monday’s city council meeting, which turned chaotic when law enforcement officers clashed with demonstrators.
On Wednesday, council members Dennis Pfeiffer and Tonya Burns requested the Michigan State Police to look into allegations of excessive force used by city officers during these events.
Pfeiffer also leveled accusations against Flint Police Chief Terence Green, asserting that he issued “unlawful” commands to his officers. According to Pfeiffer, “It’s clear that some of the officers are following orders and not following their oath or specific laws.” He further suggested that the officers involved should be placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
As of Wednesday night, the Flint Police Department had not addressed Pfeiffer’s claims. However, the department has indicated that it is examining video recordings from both incidents and might consider filing criminal charges against certain protestors.
A notable number of police officers were present at the city council meeting on Wednesday, following the disruptions at Monday’s meeting. The earlier meeting was halted when a confrontation erupted as officers attempted to remove a woman, as directed by council members. The situation escalated, resulting in a physical altercation.
The atmosphere at Wednesday’s meeting remained tense, with several individuals being escorted out. Notably, an armed man was handcuffed and removed after he continued filming the proceedings outside the designated media area, defying instructions to cease recording.
