Healthcare educators inevitably become patients, highlighting the profound impact of health professions education. This education transcends academia, influencing future caregivers who will attend to us and our communities. A recent experience at Michigan Medicine underscored this interconnectedness when a colleague, an advocate for interprofessional practice and education (IPE), discovered their care team included alumni of our IPE program. These clinicians credited interprofessional teamwork as a transformative aspect of their training, enhancing patient care and team dynamics.

In 2023, a personal health crisis further deepened an understanding of the importance of teamwork in patient care. Education is not merely preparatory; it is integral to healthcare. This philosophy drives initiatives at the University of Michigan’s Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (CIPE) and RISE (Research. Innovation. Scholarship. Education.), emphasizing the synergy between education and health.
Health professions education faces challenges such as workforce shortages, rising costs, and care complexity. These issues require teamwork and innovative educational approaches. At U-M, ten health science schools collaborate to teach students from various disciplines to work cohesively, promoting an expert team rather than individual experts. This collaborative approach leads to safer, higher-quality care, improved communication, and reduced burnout.
Breaking down hierarchies, building shared leadership
Effective teamwork in healthcare requires dismantling hierarchies that hinder communication and care. At the Ann Arbor VA, the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model centers on collaborative, patient-focused care. CIPE and RISE cultivate this cultural shift, fostering leadership and collaboration across disciplines and beyond the university, partnering with community organizations and health systems.

From the classroom to practice
Innovation in education directly impacts clinical practice. RISE’s Innovator Development Program and CIPE’s Thriving Together initiative enhance interprofessional teamwork in clinical settings, improving patient care, quality, and workforce well-being. These programs prepare students to join well-functioning teams, ensuring theoretical knowledge translates into practical application.
Thomas Lee of Press Ganey noted that strong team relationships enhance care delivery. RISE-supported innovations, such as simulation models for disease detection and training for treating youth with anxiety, demonstrate tangible improvements in patient care, reinforcing the importance of supporting educational initiatives.

As U-M embarks on the Human Health and Well-being theme year, its resources and expertise position it as a leader in integrating education and healthcare.
