Lyme Disease Surges in Michigan, Prompting New Health Precautions

Michigan is witnessing a significant rise in Lyme disease cases, with figures climbing from 553 in 2022 to an anticipated 2,167 by 2025. This alarming trend has led the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to classify the state as a “high-incidence jurisdiction,” a label given to areas recording more than 10 cases per 100,000 people for at least three consecutive years.

Rachel Burkholder, an epidemiologist specializing in vector-borne diseases with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, attributes this increase to the growing tick population in the state. “They have been increasing in population across the Midwest for a few reasons. Ticks are very acclimated to Midwest climate. They reproduce in large numbers, and they survive our winters very well, and they like our hot, humid summers,” she explained.

The rise in Lyme disease cases is not only due to more ticks but also increased awareness among the public and healthcare providers. People are now more vigilant about recognizing Lyme disease symptoms and are more likely to seek medical advice, leading to more tests being conducted.

With the warm weather approaching, Burkholder emphasizes the importance of preventing tick bites to curb the spread of Lyme disease. “Our tick populations will continue to spread, and the best thing to try to prevent this increase in cases is preventing tick bites, and that comes down to the behavior and the prevention methods that our citizens here in Michigan are utilizing,” she noted.

To protect against tick bites, Burkholder advises using an EPA-approved insect repellent, performing tick checks on oneself and pets after outdoor activities, and sticking to well-maintained trails while hiking.
