As the Michigan Democratic Party gears up for its convention next year, the race for leadership is heating up with multiple candidates vying for the top position.
Former state Senator Curtis Hertel is one notable contender, recently gaining endorsement from the party’s Black Caucus. Hertel emphasizes the importance of inclusivity within the party, stating, “We need to be the big tent that we are, which means that everyone feels listened to and that everyone has a seat at the table and is part of the decision making process.”
Hertel, who previously ran unsuccessfully for a congressional seat, expresses concern over the party’s current emphasis on top-ticket races, suggesting more attention is needed for down-ballot contests. “It’s got to be recruiting great people to run for county commission so that your grassroots is strong,” Hertel commented.
Mark Ludwig, Chair of the MDP Rural Caucus, is also in the running and has critiqued the party’s financial strategies, especially the allocation of funds for statewide campaigns. Ludwig questions the effectiveness of spending heavily on top-race marketing, suggesting, “I just really question whether your 15th showing of a commercial to somebody on legacy media is an effective use of campaign dollars.”
Both Hertel and Ludwig identify the influx of out-of-state campaign operatives as a misstep for the party, arguing that a lack of local knowledge can be detrimental.
Ludwig also highlights the need for the party to reconnect with what he terms the “activist middle,” proposing that leadership roles should not merely serve as stepping stones for politicians but actively engage and include more people.
Al “BJ” Williams, a social justice advocate from Detroit, joins the race with a focus on strengthening local organizing, recruiting candidates, and building community partnerships. More candidates may emerge before the spring convention.
The new chair will face the challenge of guiding the Michigan Democrats through critical elections in 2026, including the gubernatorial race.
