Michigan Kicks Off Early In-Person Voting for 2026 Midterm Elections

As Michigan gears up for the 2026 midterm elections, early in-person voting has officially commenced across the state. This change, stemming from a 2022 voter-approved constitutional amendment, allows residents to cast their votes ahead of the official Election Day on November 3. Several communities have taken advantage of this provision, opening polls to voters even earlier.

Understanding Early Voting in Michigan

Michigan’s adoption of early voting marks the third consecutive year where this option is available for state and federal elections. The 2022 ballot measure, which significantly expanded voting rights within the state constitution, ensures at least nine days of early voting before Election Day. Other rights include the creation of a permanent absentee voter list, prepaid ballot postage, and a state-funded ballot tracking system.

Voters in Michigan can now choose from three methods to cast their ballots:

  1. Voting absentee, with ballots accessible up to 40 days prior to the election.
  2. In-person early voting, starting statewide on Saturday, October 24.
  3. Voting in person on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3.

The Distinction Between Early and Absentee Voting

While both early and absentee voting allow ballots to be cast ahead of Election Day, they differ in execution. Early voting mirrors the traditional Election Day experience, where voters check in at polling locations, fill out their ballots on-site, and submit them directly into tabulators.

Absentee voting offers the convenience of voting from home, with ballots available well before the election. Voters can request absentee ballots online, in person, or through mail. Completed ballots can be returned via mail, secure drop boxes, or directly at polling sites. The Secretary of State’s office recommends using secure drop boxes or polling places for returning ballots within two weeks of Election Day to avoid postal delays. Absentee ballots can be tracked by entering voter information here.

Early Voting Timeline in Michigan

The statewide early voting period is set for Saturday, October 24, 2026, to Sunday, November 1, 2026, covering a minimum of nine consecutive days. However, individual communities may offer additional early voting days, extending up to 28 days before the election.

Finding Early Voting Locations

Voters can locate their nearest early voting sites by entering their address here. Additional details, including operating hours, are available through local clerk offices.

ID Requirements for Voting

At check-in, voters are requested to present identification, although those without ID can still vote by signing an affidavit. Acceptable forms of ID include Michigan driver’s licenses or state IDs (even expired ones), out-of-state driver’s licenses, government-issued photo IDs, U.S. passports, military IDs, educational institution IDs, and tribal IDs.

Voter Registration Status

To verify registration status, voters can visit Michigan.gov/Vote. Registration is open until 8 p.m. on Election Day, with the Secretary of State advising early registration. Voters can register online, by mail, or in person up to 15 days before the election. Within 14 days, in-person registration is required, and more information can be found here.
