Michigan Introduces New Dashboards for Monitoring Community Safety

To enhance community safety and inform targeted prevention measures, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has launched a series of online dashboards. These tools offer valuable insights into local violence and injury statistics.

A key feature is a real-time interactive dashboard that tracks emergency department visits resulting from firearm injuries. Other dashboards provide data on nonfatal suicide attempts, violent deaths, and the incidence rates of the 10 most common injuries.

Elizabeth Hertel, the director of MDHHS, emphasized the importance of these tools, stating, “It is imperative that Michigan communities, local leaders and policymakers have access to the best information available when making decisions intended to make our communities safer.”

Hertel further explained, “These dashboards will help people better understand the injury and violence prevention work that needs to be done in their area. By providing timely data, communities can make decisions in real time to protect those who are the most vulnerable.”

Officials highlight that these resources allow communities to observe changes in injury and violence trends over time, pinpoint at-risk groups, and develop effective intervention strategies.
