As Michigan grapples with escalating fuel costs, a rare consensus emerges between the state’s major U.S. Senate candidates. Both Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed are advocating for the suspension of state and federal gas taxes.
Fuel prices have surged, with AAA Michigan reporting regular gasoline reaching $4.75 per gallon—a 40-cent increase in just a week. Diesel prices have climbed even more sharply to $6.54, a jump of over 60 cents. Combined state and federal taxes contribute approximately 70 cents per gallon of regular gas in Michigan.
Mike Rogers emphasized the need for financial relief, stating, “Working families need leaders who will bring the costs of energy down, not ones who will make their lives less affordable.” He has urged for a halt on gas taxes, asserting that “hardworking Michiganders deserve relief at the pump.” More details can be found on his campaign site.
Similarly, Abdul El-Sayed supports the tax suspension but attributes the price hike to broader issues.
