The U.S. unemployment rate rose to 4.2% in September, with job growth falling short of predictions, while inflation reached 3.4% over the previous year, partly due to tariffs and military actions against Iran. Despite criticism of economic conditions, the Trump administration claims achievements in job creation, reduced crime, and economic growth, although a significant majority of Americans perceive an affordability crisis. President Trump has defended his economic policies and actions, asserting that the nation is experiencing a prosperous period, which he regards as the “Golden Age of America.”

The U.S. unemployment rate rose to 4.2% in September, up from 4.1% in the previous month, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Oct. 2. The economy gained only 29,000 jobs, falling short of analysts’ expectations of 84,000 new jobs according to the Wall Street Journal.

Revised figures from BLS indicated job growth in July and August was 60,000 jobs less than originally reported.

In a September 2024 speech to the Economic Club of New York, then-candidate Donald Trump pledged to implement economic policies that would “bring jobs and growth” to unprecedented levels and promised to “rapidly defeat inflation.”

Trump assumed office in January 2025 and in August 2025, removed the BLS commissioner, accusing the agency baselessly of manipulating jobs data to harm the Republican image.

Under Trump’s selected head, unemployment rates remain higher than during most of President Biden’s term.

In September, BLS reported a 3.4% inflation rate over 12 months with fuel oil prices climbing over 50%. Economists attribute increased costs to Trump’s tariff impositions and military actions against Iran.

A White House spokesperson stated: “President Trump enacted historic tax cuts, reduced prescription drug costs, and boosted private-sector jobs. Wages are up, core inflation is down, and the poverty rate is at a record low, illustrating a robust economy.”

A Harris poll published by the Guardian highlights that 95% of Americans recognize an affordability crisis.

At an Oct. 2 campaign event in Mobile, Trump commented on the Iran conflict: “Prices are down, but remember, this small price avoids nuclear threats. We’ve had great support.”

Trump declared, “This is the Golden Age of America. Our nation is doing better now than ever before.”
