Pure Michigan, the state’s acclaimed tourism campaign, marks its 20th anniversary this year, having drawn millions to explore Michigan and bolstering its tourism economy with billions.

Over two decades, Pure Michigan has transformed from a campaign into a “love letter to our state,” noted Kelly Wolgamott, vice president of Pure Michigan.

“While promoting authentic destinations and cultural attractions, the true magic is in the memories created here,” Wolgamott shared in a press release. “This anniversary celebrates family trips, weekend getaways, and stories yet to unfold.”

Pure Michigan advertisements consistently emphasize the unique features of the Great Lakes State, from festivals and signature dishes to sandy beaches.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared May as Pure Michigan Month to honor its 20th anniversary. Her proclamation spotlights the campaign’s significant impact: 789,000 trips generating $1.3 billion in 2024, contributing over $79 million in state tax revenue, and fueling $54.8 billion in tourism economic activity, sustaining one in 17 jobs.

“Pure Michigan narrates our story, defining our state as a world-class destination,” noted Whitmer in the tourism brand’s press release. “This month, we celebrate 20 years of Pure Michigan’s role in driving the tourism industry, supporting over 350,000 jobs. I encourage all to celebrate this milestone.”

The latest campaign, launched in April, aims to lure tourists with a $6.4 million initiative, targeting out-of-state tourists and cities like Alpena, Detroit, and Traverse City, featuring print and digital ads, and a “citywide takeover” in Chicago.

In 2025, Pure Michigan was recognized by Fast Company’s “Brands That Matter,” for cultural impact beyond marketing.

To celebrate its founding anniversary, Pure Michigan launches “Yours Purely.” Supporters can use @puremichigan, #YoursPurely, and #PureMichigan20 on social media. Top posts will feature on Pure Michigan’s profiles. Limited-edition 20th anniversary merchandise is available at TheMittenState.com.
