Senator Peters Criticizes Trump Administration’s Alleged Threats to Free Speech
In a recent Senate committee meeting, Michigan Democrat Senator Gary Peters voiced serious concerns regarding what he perceives as threats to free speech by the Trump administration. Highlighting actions that he believes undermine constitutionally-protected rights, Peters stated, “government censorship is wrong. Full stop.” He outlined several instances he described as “unprecedented efforts to wield government power as a tool to suppress free speech and stifle legitimate criticism and legitimate political discourse.”
Among the actions Peters criticized were the denial of media credentials and access to outlets over unflattering coverage of the president; lawsuits against media outlets for disagreeable content; and the controversial suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel by ABC, following threats from the Federal Communications Commission to revoke the network’s license.
Peters emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Let’s be clear. These acts are unprecedented, unprecedented in American history, and they rightfully raise alarms for every American.” He urged committee members to investigate these incidents thoroughly, irrespective of the political affiliation of those responsible, stressing the importance of safeguarding First Amendment rights against such overreach.
Support for Peters’ stance has emerged from various political quarters. Some Democratic leaders are actively proposing legislation to affirm protected speech forms. Notably, Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz also condemned the FCC’s action, labeling it “dangerous as hell.”
Despite mounting criticism, President Trump has remained steadfast in his approach. He recently described negative television coverage as “illegal” and asserted that he “took the freedom of speech away” concerning the act of burning the American flag, despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that such acts are protected under free speech rights.
