Seven members from the University of Michigan community have been honored as Distinguished Fellows by the National Academies of Practice (NAP) during an event in Washington, D.C. This recognition was part of NAP’s Annual Meeting and Forum. The ceremony also celebrated the launch of NAP’s newest academy, the Public Health Academy, enhancing the focus on public health in interprofessional collaboration. Neil Maniar of Northeastern University leads as the academy chair, with Vani Patterson from U-M as chair-elect.
Patterson and Maniar have been instrumental in the development of this academy, emphasizing public health’s critical role in interprofessional collaboration. The group of U-M inductees includes faculty and clinicians from the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses. These inductees and their respective NAP academies are:
- Olivia Anderson, clinical associate professor of nutritional sciences and associate chair in the School of Public Health; Public Health Academy.
- Lenette Jones, Nancy S. and Michael B. McLelland Professor of Nursing in the School of Nursing; Nursing Academy.
- Erin Khang, clinical assistant professor in the School of Social Work; Social Work Academy.
- Lisa Martin, professor and chair of the Department of Health and Human Services at UM-Dearborn; Public Health Academy.
- Vani Patterson, administrative director of the Center for Interprofessional Education; Public Health Academy.
- Suzanne Trojanowski, clinical associate professor of physical therapy at UM-Flint; Physical Therapy Academy.
- Carman Turkelson, professor of nursing at UM-Flint; Nursing Academy.
Established in 1981, the National Academies of Practice advocates for interprofessional education, research, and public policy. The organization educates members, facilitates research, and advocates for improved healthcare policy through interprofessional practice. NAP’s academies cover a range of fields, including Nursing, Nutrition and Dietetics, Social Work, and more, aiming to enhance interprofessional care.
Receiving membership in NAP is a prestigious honor for professionals excelling in their fields and committed to advancing interprofessional education and practice. The induction of these seven members increases the total U-M faculty inducted since 2020 to 16.
