ANN ARBOR, Mich. – University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is enhancing pediatric care with a significant $10 million grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. This funding will upgrade the Brandon Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Reese Partlow Pediatric Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (PCTU), crucial for treating critical cardiac patients.
The renovation will increase PCTU beds, addressing the growing demand for specialized heart procedures. “For decades, people all over the world have looked to the University of Michigan and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital as leaders in health care,” said Santa J. Ono, Ph.D., president of U-M. The hospital frequently handles high-risk births, necessitating more NICU beds to accommodate the influx of newborns.
C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is a renowned national and international center for congenital heart defects, resulting in a rise in pediatric heart surgeries. This expansion is vital for updating NICU and PCTU spaces to meet patient demands. The Mott Foundation’s grant will enable NICU renovations on the 8th floor and PCTU on the 10th floor, restoring the PCTU’s 30-bed capacity.
These updates will allow the hospital to manage more transfers and improve advanced treatments for complex conditions. “The Mott Foundation’s vision and support over the years have helped our hospital to not only provide world-class care for the most complex patients but also adapt to the changing needs of our communities,” stated Luanne Thomas Ewald, M.H.A., chief operating officer of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.
Renovations are scheduled to begin in early 2025, concluding by the end of 2026, with no service interruptions. C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital has been a leader in pediatric medicine, providing cutting-edge technology and treatments. The Mott Foundation has been a steadfast supporter since 1969, contributing to major developments, including a $25 million grant for building the current hospital in 2011.
Ridgway White, president and CEO of the Mott Foundation, emphasized their dedication to enhancing community health: “The Mott Foundation has always been committed to improving the well-being of residents in our community and beyond.”
