Gov. Greg Gianforte has tapped Larry Flynn as the new director of the Montana Department of Transportation, following Chris Dorrington’s departure from the position on Oct. 1. Flynn, with extensive experience in the agency, steps into this crucial role overseeing state highways, railroads, and airports. The department manages a $1 billion annual budget and a workforce of approximately 2,000 employees, ensuring the state’s transportation infrastructure remains robust.
Flynn has been with MDT since 2023 as deputy director, previously serving as the chief financial officer for 16 years. His commitment to the department is evident as he takes on new responsibilities. “I am honored by the opportunity to lead the Montana Department of Transportation, a place I’ve dedicated my life to,” Flynn stated. He expressed gratitude to Governor Gianforte for the trust placed in him and emphasized the importance of investing in roads and bridges, enhancing road safety, and providing exceptional customer service across Montana.
Recent months have seen several leadership changes in Montana’s executive agencies. Misty Ann Giles stepped down as director of the Department of Administration in August, followed by Charlie Brereton’s announcement to exit the Department of Health and Human Services by month’s end.
