Montana has appointed Kurt Alme as its new U.S. attorney, bringing back the former state budget director under Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte. The U.S. Department of Justice announced Alme’s return to the Montana District, where he previously served during President Donald Trump’s administration. Alme, originally from Great Falls, will once again work from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Billings.
With a background as an assistant U.S. attorney from 2003 to 2010, Alme also held the position of director of the Montana Department of Revenue under former Gov. Judy Martz. His reappointment comes on the recommendation of Republican U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, who supported his initial appointment in 2017.
The Justice Department describes Alme as an interim appointee, set to serve for 120 days or until the Senate confirms a permanent choice. Most recently, Alme was executive president for planned giving at the National Christian Foundation, enhancing his experience in leadership roles.
