Montana’s Largest Labor Union Chooses New Leadership

The Montana Federation of Public Employees (MFPE), the largest labor union in the state, has elected new leaders during its annual conference. This diverse union includes teachers, school staff, law enforcement, and various city, county, and state workers. The election marks a leadership change as current state Rep. Melissa Romano, a Democrat from Helena and an experienced teacher, steps in as MFPE president. Romano succeeds Amanda Curtis, who has been steering the organization since 2020.

“Livable wages, real benefits, and fair working conditions unite MFPE members across our wide professional and political spectrum,” Romano said in a statement. She emphasized her commitment to using her extensive policy experience to advance union goals through informed and active membership. Alongside Romano, new leadership includes 1st Vice President-elect Lance Edward from the Billings Education Association, 2nd Vice President Michelle Wheat of the Montana Department of Transportation Employees, and Treasurer-elect Eric Matthews from the Bozeman Education Association.

The newly elected officials will assume their roles on June 15. Meanwhile, Curtis has been planning her retirement from MFPE to return to teaching in Butte, her previous home before relocating to Helena. Despite stepping down, Curtis will continue to contribute to the union as a member and mentor.

“MFPE members are proud to have organized Montana’s largest labor union, a union built on democracy where members call the shots,” Curtis stated. Over the past six years, the union has achieved significant successes, such as securing historic pay plans for state and higher education employees and establishing a statewide school health trust. Curtis expressed gratitude for the members’ leadership and confidence in Romano’s ability to continue the union’s mission.
