Montana’s congressional figures present mixed reactions regarding President Donald Trump’s decision to ease sanctions on Russia, including permitting Russian diesel in the global market. The move sparks a debate over its impact on the economy and geopolitical strategies.
Recently, the president halted recent Russian sanctions approved by Congress and allowed Russian diesel sales through April 7, 2027. This allows Russia to distribute 2.25 million barrels of diesel globally. The Treasury Department outlined the terms.
Responses from Montana Free Press interviews show division among candidates and elected officials. Some oppose lifting the ban, citing security risks, while others believe it could ease economic pressures. Sens. Steve Daines, Tim Sheehy, and Senate candidate Kurt Alme did not comment.
Rep. Troy Downing, representing Montana’s Eastern Congressional District, firmly opposes the president’s actions. His spokesperson, Keegan Bittner, stated, “Congressman Downing strongly opposes purchasing Russian diesel. American dollars should not be flowing into Vladimir Putin’s war machine.”
Downing, alongside other representatives like Rep. Ryan Zinke and Sens. Daines and Sheehy, supported the Sanctioning Russia Act.
Zinke emphasizes refining U.S. domestic oil to reduce dependence on foreign diesel, suggesting Russia’s temporary allowance eases supply but urges infrastructure investment. He remarked, “Allowing Russian diesel onto the market temporarily can help ease supply pressures.”
Independent candidate Seth Bodnar criticized Trump’s involvement in Iran, linking it to elevated fuel prices. He claims, “The president is trying to fix a self-inflicted energy crisis caused by an illegal war…”
Democratic candidate Alani Bankhead urged reinstating sanctions and halting Russian diesel imports. Bankhead supports the REPO Implementation Act to aid Ukraine financially.
Libertarian candidate Kyle Austin supports Trump’s diesel arrangement, noting its cost-lowering benefits for Americans.
In Montana’s Western Congressional District race, Aaron Flint focuses on decreasing diesel costs and ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. He stated, “Montanans are getting hammered by high diesel prices…”
His opponent, Democrat Sam Forstag, aims to close loopholes in the Graham Act and calls for accountability in the administration’s actions.
Eastern District Independent candidate Michael Eisenhauer questioned Trump’s strategy, stating it prioritizes political goals over national security.
Libertarian Patrick McCracken supports Trump’s decisions, citing the importance of affordable diesel for Americans.
