Montana’s Superintendent of Public Instruction has publicly acknowledged a “lapse in judgment” following her arrest and DUI charge in late June. The incident involving Republican Susie Hedalen, elected last November, occurred early on June 22, as noted in court documents. A Belgrade officer pulled her over, with the arrest initially reported by Lee newspapers.
According to court affidavits, the arresting officer observed Hedalen’s vehicle traveling at 50 mph in a 35 mph zone on Jackrabbit Lane. As she made a left turn, her car nearly collided with oncoming traffic. During the stop, Hedalen was slow to open her window and displayed a “dazed expression,” as per the officer’s account. Her eyes were described as “bloodshot and watery,” and the officer noted a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” along with slurred speech.
Hedalen reportedly admitted to consuming “one glass of wine.” Field sobriety tests led the officer to conclude she was “under the influence of alcohol.” She declined a breath test and was taken to Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital for a blood sample, subsequently sent to the Montana State Crime Lab.
Requests for comment from Hedalen’s attorney went unanswered. Her chief of staff confirmed the event occurred off duty and shared Hedalen’s statement: “I apologize and take full responsibility for my lapse in judgment that led to this incident. I want to thank the Belgrade Police for their professionalism and commitment to public safety. As I move forward from this personal issue, it will in no way impact my service to the people of Montana.”
The Montana Democratic Party criticized Hedalen, stating her arrest “undermines public confidence in her leadership” and demanded her resignation. Party Board Chair Robyn Driscoll remarked, “Hedalen made a dangerous decision to put lives at risk, and we demand full accountability and believe she must step down immediately.” The Montana GOP spokesperson declined to comment, referring to Hedalen’s statement instead.
Court records reveal this as Hedalen’s first DUI charge with no prior convictions. She was released the same day after posting an $885 cash bond. Hedalen’s court arraignment is scheduled for July 8.

One Montana lawmaker passed 30 bills this year. Seventeen ended the session with zero.
Montana’s political parties diverged wildly in both the rate and the amount of legislation to become law during the 69th legislative session earlier this year. Republicans passed more than six times as many bills as Democrats — 813 versus 134. GOP-sponsored measures also cleared the bar at a much higher rate, with nearly 60% of Republican-sponsored bills passing, compared to 35% of measures brought by Democrats.

Classic culinary combos are often rooted in geography. Chefs often say, “that which grows together, goes together.” This principle cannot possibly be true of jalapeño and cheddar, the flavor-makers in these seared sliders with a special sauce.
