Montana U.S. Sen. Tim Sheehy has filed a lawsuit against Freedom Munitions, claiming faulty ammunition led to his injuries. The lawsuit targets the Idaho-based ammo manufacturer, alleging that their .308 caliber rounds misignited and caused damage. Freedom Munitions has not commented on the matter as of the article’s publication.
Sheehy claims he purchased 1,000 rounds in June 2024, and two incidents that fall led to personal injuries. The misfires resulted in hand and facial injuries, some requiring stitches, stated in the federal court filing from February.
“Senator Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL and weapons expert, was injured after a defective round he purchased from Freedom Munitions exploded in his rifle when he pulled the trigger,” said spokesperson Tate Mitchell. Sheehy aims to highlight the dangers of potentially defective ammunition sold by Freedom Munitions, planning to donate any proceeds to Montana medical charities.
The lawsuit seeks damages for medical costs, pain and suffering, and firearm replacement. The incidents reportedly occurred during the 2024 election season when Sheehy was running against Democratic Sen. Jon Tester. Both accidents allegedly happened on Sheehy’s ranch in Meagher County.
The lawsuit describes the misfires in detail, explaining how the faulty ammunition caused the rifle chamber to explode and injure Sheehy with shrapnel. The first incident occurred in fall 2024, with the second on September 25 of the same year.
Sheehy claims Freedom Munitions didn’t properly warn customers of the ammo’s issues. Although a recall was issued on their website, Sheehy states he wasn’t directly informed. Initially, Sheehy offered to forgo legal action if the company covered his expenses and donated to a Montana health charity, but Freedom Munitions hasn’t clarified their recall actions.
