Stavros Anthony’s Stance on Government Assistance Sparks Debate
Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony has drawn attention for his critical remarks about Nevada welfare recipients, despite benefiting from taxpayer-funded resources himself.
In a Fox News interview on July 16, Anthony highlighted his upbringing, stating that his parents, who emigrated from Cyprus, instilled in him the value of self-reliance. “You don’t ask them for unemployment checks, you don’t ask them for food stamps …” Anthony remarked. “I am here to support Nevadans in ways that they want support, but I’m not here to carry them. They need to carry themselves.”
However, recent data from Transparent Nevada reveals that Anthony received $210,115 in pension payments funded by taxpayers last year.
Since his election as lieutenant governor in 2022, Anthony incurred $3,300 in public expenses for his personal vehicle within the first six months of his term. According to a report by The Nevada Independent, this figure marks the highest annual expenditure on such costs in the past 15 years.
Controversy has not been new for Anthony. Earlier this year, an ethics complaint was filed against him, alleging he allowed state employees to campaign for GOP candidates during work hours. Such activities are prohibited under Nevada law, which forbids government officials from engaging in political activities during state time. Notably, the complaint originated from a fellow Republican.
As Anthony seeks re-election, he faces competition from Democratic state Rep. Sandra Jauregui.
