The North Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) approved eight projects this month, allocating $1.5 million to support various initiatives and create 270 jobs.
“These funds make strategic investments in our rural communities to help them seize opportunities to prosper,” Governor Roy Cooper said. “We are committed to improving the economy in all parts of our state.”
The RIA, supported by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, reviews and approves local funding requests. Grants can address infrastructure development, building renovation, and site improvements.
In Rowan County, the Town of Spencer will receive a $75,000 grant to expand Cabarrus Rowan Community Health Centers. This public funding, combined with over $2 million in private investment, will create 11 jobs.
Spencer Town Manager Peter Franzese stated, “The project is a significant capital investment in the community. We’re particularly interested in the improved services the clinic will offer, including restoring pharmacy services.”
A $500,000 grant will help Thomasville in Davidson County connect sewer capacity to a new steel manufacturing plant by Nucor, creating at least 180 jobs and providing over $350 million in investment.
In Boiling Springs, Hannah’s Coffee House will open a second location after a $25,000 grant for building repairs. Boiling Springs Town Manager Zachary Parker emphasized the importance of this investment to the social fabric of the community, highlighting a long-standing commitment to small businesses.
The other funded projects include:
- The city of Lexington will receive $200,000 for the reuse of a 65,000 sq ft building for Millwork Brands, Inc.
- Infinity Link Communications will get $450,000 to open a new facility in Kinston, creating 51 jobs and spurring $46 million in private investment.
- Swain County will receive $25,000 to help Wise Guyz Grille open a fourth location, creating five jobs.
- The City of Burlington was awarded $100,000 to expand the Matthews International Facility, potentially creating 14 jobs.
- In Stanly County, a $90,000 investment will help Flextol expand an existing building, creating 11 jobs.
These projects will also receive $365 million in private financing.
