North Carolina Allocates $13.7 Million for Community Development Initiatives

The state of North Carolina is making a significant investment in the well-being of its communities through a substantial allocation of funds aimed at enhancing local infrastructure and housing. Governor Josh Stein, in collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Commerce, has unveiled more than $13.7 million in grants to bolster projects that benefit low- and moderate-income residents across the state.

In a strategic move to address critical community needs, these funds are part of the Community Development Block Grant – Neighborhood Revitalization (CDBG-NR) program. The initiative is designed to empower local governments in tailoring development projects to meet the unique requirements of their respective areas. Governor Stein commented on the initiative, stating, “North Carolinians need safe housing, reliable infrastructure, and places to enjoy. These grants will help local governments address these critical needs, strengthen neighborhoods and local economies, and improve quality of life for North Carolinians across our state.”

The CDBG-NR program, funded by federal resources, facilitates investments in various areas, including housing rehabilitation, public facilities, infrastructure enhancements, and neighborhood improvements. The program’s overarching goal is to improve local resilience and quality of life for residents with low and moderate incomes.

North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley emphasized the importance of these grants, noting, “CDBG-NR funding provides local leaders with the resources they need to invest in housing, infrastructure, and public facilities that support long-term prosperity.” These efforts align with the state’s First in Opportunity Strategic Economic Development Plan, aiming to foster long-term economic growth and broaden housing opportunities.

This particular round of CDBG-NR funding includes 13 projects with awards ranging from $693,773 to $2.5 million. These projects cover various regional priorities, such as housing reconstruction, infrastructure development, and community initiatives.

Since the program’s inception in 2017, North Carolina has allocated $175.8 million in CDBG-NR grants to revitalize its communities through enhanced housing, improved living environments, infrastructure development, and expanded economic opportunities. The program mandates that a minimum of 70% of the grant funds directly benefit low- and moderate-income households.
