Race Fans Flock to North Wilkesboro Speedway for Major NASCAR Event
Racing enthusiasts from across the globe are converging on North Wilkesboro Speedway (NWS) in North Carolina for the much-anticipated Window World 450 NASCAR Cup Series. This high-profile race weekend, scheduled from July 16 to 19, is bolstered by a reimbursement grant of up to $1.26 million from North Carolina’s Major Events, Games, and Attractions (MEGA) Fund. It is expected to draw visitors from 48 states, the District of Columbia, and eight foreign nations, including Australia.
Governor Josh Stein heralds this event, saying, “North Carolina is proud to host world-class sporting events that strengthen local economies, support small businesses, and showcase everything our state has to offer.” This event underscores North Carolina’s rich motorsport heritage and its appeal as a top-tier destination for racing fans.
The four-day celebration begins with a Cup Series hauler parade through Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro on Thursday night, followed by NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series practice and qualifying, plus a zMAX CARS Tour doubleheader on Friday. Saturday’s highlights include the FaithFest 250 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race and Cup Series practice and qualifying. The grand finale on Sunday features the Window World 450 Cup race, accompanied by a pre-race concert by Sawyer Brown. Remarkably, this marks North Wilkesboro Speedway’s first NASCAR Cup Series points race in nearly three decades.
The event promises to inject millions into the local economy, benefiting hotels, restaurants, retailers, and entertainment venues, while attracting a diverse audience from near and far.
“North Carolina’s sports and tourism industries are powerful economic drivers,” noted Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley. He emphasized that the MEGA Fund enables communities to host nationally recognized events that boost visitor spending and local business support, enhancing North Carolina’s reputation as a premier sports and entertainment hub.
In a significant initiative, North Wilkesboro Speedway is collaborating with the North Carolina Human Trafficking Commission during the race weekend to raise public awareness about human trafficking. The campaign aims to educate attendees on recognizing the signs and reporting suspected cases, utilizing educational displays, public announcements, social media, and informational materials throughout the venue.
Jessica Fickenscher, executive vice president of North Wilkesboro Speedway, expressed pride in the ongoing partnership and the positive regional economic impact since NASCAR’s return in 2023. She also highlighted the collaborative efforts with the Human Trafficking Commission to promote community safety during the event.
The MEGA Fund continues to play a vital role in attracting significant sporting events and entertainment attractions to North Carolina, fostering tourism and economic activity. With over $48.9 million already awarded in grants, the fund is set to further bolster North Carolina’s visitor economy.
