Security Now a Priority for NEPA County Election Officials

Luzerne County fortified its election bureau building with large rocks on Tuesday, aiming to prevent vehicle attacks and boost security ahead of the upcoming election, officials reported.

These security measures align with recommendations from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo requested the agency’s assessment to reveal vulnerabilities and enhance protection.

Election officials in Luzerne County now dedicate about 40% of their time to security tasks, collaborating with local law enforcement and emergency managers on election plans. This includes routine training to handle potential voting disruptions.

“It’s very volatile, and Luzerne County reflects national trends,” said Crocamo, who oversees election office staff. “People’s emotions can sometimes escalate.”

Crocamo is considering panic buttons for poll managers across 130 voting locations on Election Day. Pennsylvania law restricts law enforcement presence inside polling sites. However, Crocamo’s team is discussing radio-equipped emergency responders at these locations for rapid response.

On Tuesday, three Luzerne County residents sued Crocamo to challenge her decision to eliminate all four drop boxes for mail-in and absentee ballots in the Nov. 5 election.

The lawsuit claims Crocamo lacks the authority to halt drop box usage due to alleged safety and security concerns.
