Alaska’s Rep. Nick Begich Champions Tariffs Amid Controversy Over Outsourcing Practices

Nick Begich, a member of Alaska’s prominent political family, is advocating for increased domestic manufacturing while facing scrutiny for his previous role in outsourcing jobs overseas. Before his election to Congress in 2024, Begich served as the CEO of FarShore, an IT company known for offshoring jobs to India.

Begich, who has expressed strong support for President Donald Trump’s tariff policy, argues that the tariffs are vital for protecting American industries and workers. “My priority is ensuring that Alaska’s fishermen, energy producers, and manufacturers are not disadvantaged in international trade negotiations,” Begich stated in an interview with the Alaska Beacon. He emphasized that tariffs should be used strategically to bolster domestic industries.

Despite Begich’s claims, the impact of the tariffs has been contentious. According to the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, the average American household incurred an additional $1,000 in costs last year as import fees were passed on to consumers. Begich has consistently voted in favor of maintaining these tariffs, opposing bipartisan proposals to repeal them.

The tariffs have notably affected Alaska’s seafood industry, which relies on exporting fish to China for processing before re-importing them to the U.S. This has increased costs and reduced demand for Alaska’s wild salmon, a significant economic contributor to the state.

Begich’s stance on tariffs contrasts with his business practices at FarShore, where most employees are based in India and Croatia, as reported by the Alaska Dispatch News. The company has defended outsourcing as a cost-cutting measure, stating in a 2019 blog post that it is a beneficial strategy for startups with limited resources.

When addressing his outsourcing practices, Begich remarked on the global nature of business, saying, “We have to recognize we live in a global world, right? I think we do well to remember that here in Alaska we’re part of a global community.”

As Begich campaigns for a second term, the upcoming primary on August 18 will determine his electoral challenger.
