John Sununu’s Campaign Expenditures Under Scrutiny
In recent U.S. Senate campaign finance reports, John Sununu’s financial allocations have drawn attention due to payments exceeding $36,000 made to his sister, Catherine Sununu, for consulting services. Additionally, Sununu has reimbursed himself more than $15,000.
These financial transactions took place from March through June of this year, as indicated by the campaign’s financial disclosures. The funds directed to Catherine Sununu were designated for “Fundraising Consulting,” whereas the reimbursements to John Sununu were categorized as “Reimbursement-See Memo.” Notably, no memo appears to have been submitted alongside these entries.
The Sununu family maintains a significant presence in New Hampshire’s political arena. John H. Sununu, the family patriarch, was governor from 1983 to 1989 and subsequently served as White House chief of staff under President George H.W. Bush. His son, Chris Sununu, governed the state from 2017 until the previous year, and John Sununu himself held a U.S. Senate seat from 2003 to 2009.
Beyond their political influence, the Sununus are also known for their substantial financial assets. Michael Sununu, another of John’s brothers, established Sununu Holdings LLC, an investment firm in which John is a shareholder. In 2024, John H. Sununu transferred 900,000 shares of mining stock to the firm’s portfolio.
John Sununu’s net worth is estimated to reach up to $36.3 million, with Chris Sununu’s wealth approximated at $7.4 million. This financial prowess prompts inquiries regarding the necessity of employing family members on the campaign payroll.
Catherine Sununu’s past financial dealings have also faced examination. In 2017, her interior design business was compensated $50,188 for “supplies and decor” during Chris Sununu’s gubernatorial inauguration, an expense she approved as a member of the inaugural committee.
The Union Leader highlighted that Catherine’s business lacked an online presence or a functional contact number, although she asserted to the publication that her payment was justified as she handled comprehensive planning for the event.
As John Sununu campaigns to reclaim a Senate seat, he is anticipated to face a formidable challenge. In the upcoming primary on September 8, he is set against former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown, with the victor likely to compete against Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas in the general election.
