UW System president unhappy with Milwaukee protesters’ deal

Article Summary –

University of Wisconsin System President, Jay Rothman, expressed disappointment at a deal between the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and pro-Palestinian students to resolve a two-week encampment. The agreement called for a ceasefire in Gaza and cited a United Nations expert and the International Court of Justice, implying Israel’s actions could be considered a “plausible genocide”. The deal, which also agreed not to ticket students for violating a state rule banning camping on campus property, attracted criticism from local Jewish groups who claimed the university had failed to support Jewish students and had caved to protester demands.

UW System President Questions UWM’s Deal with Protesters

The University of Wisconsin System president, Jay Rothman, has expressed disappointment over a deal UW-Milwaukee struck with pro-Palestinian protesters to end a two-week encampment. He is currently reviewing the decision-making process behind the deal.

Exact objections regarding the agreement were not specified by UW System spokesperson Mark Pitsch. The deal included calls for a Gaza ceasefire, noting that both the United Nations expert and the International Court of Justice termed Israel’s actions as a “plausible genocide.” Furthermore, it agreed not to ticket students for camping on campus property.

“Our public universities must maintain neutrality on challenging public issues while ensuring accountability and responsibility,” said Rothman. This response followed criticism from local Jewish groups.

“Students should be free from harassment and intimidation,” Rothman added. UWM is currently examining the concerns raised by the Jewish groups and plans to address its decision-making process in a subsequent statement.

In a similar development, UW-Madison also reached an agreement with protesters, which Rothman appeared to support. “Chancellor Mnookin worked through dialogue resulting in a satisfactory outcome,” he stated.
