Public Input Sought on Enbridge’s Line 5 Tunnel Proposal
As discussions surrounding the proposed Enbridge Line 5 tunnel intensify, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is hosting its final virtual public meeting on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). This tunnel, intended to run under the Straits of Mackinac, has attracted significant scrutiny and debate.
President Donald Trump previously directed the Army Corps to expedite this project amid an “energy emergency” declaration. However, the EIS draft has faced criticism for allegedly overlooking potential environmental impacts associated with the tunnel, focusing instead on the specific areas where construction begins and ends.
Additionally, critics argue the EIS fails to address the broader climate change implications linked to the fossil fuels transported through Line 5 to refineries and end-users.
Tonight’s virtual gathering is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. and can be accessed via web at https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83177558568 or through audio by dialing +1 301 715 8592.
For those unable to attend, written comments are being accepted until June 30, 2025. Correspondence should be sent to:

According to the Corps’ notice, all feedback will be incorporated into the Detroit District’s administrative record, analyzed, and considered throughout the preparation of the Final EIS. Lieutenant Colonel Wallace Bandeff remarked, “Even when operating under emergency procedures, the Detroit District remains committed to following the NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) process.”
